Cat's best friend

Our Readers recommend:

Finding the Way Home, and pamphlet entitled Living With Chronic Illness
by Gail Heiss (Mendocino author)
Many people are shaped by their illness -- their physicians offer no books or information. I am a Registered Nurse and run Chronic Illness classes in Chico. We especially cover the psychological effects that these books cover so beautifully, giving one HOPE. Chapters for family and friends who also need a lot of help.

Catwings series (Catwings, Catwings Return, Wonderful Alexander & the Catwings)
by Ursula Le Guin
Magical, engrossing and a charming trio of books for boys and girls. (Editor's note: at least two staff members also know, love and recommend these books for all ages).

Hook, Line & Murder
by Thom Elkjer
A romantic murder mystery set in Mendocino County (Gualala) and written by a local author.

The Mists of Avalon
by Marion Bradley
The capstone piece of the Arthurian legends -- fills in all the gaps and answers all the questions left unanswered by previous works.

Island
by Aldous Huxley
A realistic and unsentimental view of a Utopian society, including how it began, how it's maintained, and how it ends. Should be required reading for everybody!

Secrets Of A Jewish Baker
by George Greenstein
I've been searching for twenty years, and this is probably as close as you'll ever get to baking real Jewish rye bread at home (though it does call for a kind of flour apparently unknown anywhere in the world outside of N.Y.C.). Then, try the Semolina bread, and the Millet-Rye bread, and.... I'm working my way through the book. Good, clear instructions for beginners.

Country of Memory
by K. C. Frederick
Sudden appearances of strong women, even to the impact of a gas explosion set by his mother, accompany Petir, a bureauclerk, through a mythic country in "Eastern Europe," as he takes a chance to understand his others -- including a hornet of a man who thinks Petir's the source of his grief. A writer's writer.

Rainbow Fish
I like it because Rainbow Fish is beautiful and shares her shiny, sparkly scales with the other fishes.

The Anatomist
Intriguing story filled with detailed Renaissance theology. If you want a good yarn and insight into the misogyny of the Roman Catholic Church, read this.

The Four Agreements
by Miguel Ruiz.
A simple yet profound book. Patently practical wisdom that when applied to life situations, creates magic! Ancient wisdom in a timeless package.

Soul of the Night
by Chet Raymo.
A journey through time, science, myth and literature. Elegant, eloquent and very accessible writing. Raymo, professor of physics and astronomy at a New England college, writes with the heart of a poet. My favorite essays. If stranded on a deserted isle....

Surviving Grief ... and Learning to Live Again
by Catherine Sanders.
An excellent book on grief stages ... it's the only tangible thing I had to get me through ... a wonderful help. This book let me see where I was at and how to keep going.
