 | Stunning Revelation: Local Woman Was Raised By Ghosts
When author Neil Gaiman recently won both the prestigious Newbery Medal and the Hugo Award for his novel The Graveyard Book, critics raved about his unusual main character, a boy who grows up in a graveyard, where he's cared for by a loving community of ghosts. Now, Comptche resident Katy Tahja has revealed that she, too, grew up in a cemetery, surrounded by fascinating characters from Mendocino history who guided and protected her as a girl. One of those ghosts, she says, still keeps an eye on her among the shelves at Gallery Bookshop, where she has worked for the past twenty years.
Katy is offering to tell her stories to local school groups and homeschoolers. She says, "I'm not keeping this a secret any longer. Yes, my childhood was unusual, but I loved those dead people like family and I'd like to share my story with a new generation. You know, it takes a graveyard to raise a child." Katy will speak at Gallery Bookshop on Halloween, Saturday October 31 at 6:30 p.m.
Linda Rosengarten, owner of Cheshire Books in Fort Bragg, speculated that Tahja's announcement may be a ploy to garner publicity for The Graveyard Book. "I've heard Mr. Gaiman has offered to visit the store that comes up with the most creative community event based on his book," said Rosengarten. Gallery Bookshop owner Christie Olson Day responded, "I've seen the ghost in our store myself -- we even have a photograph of her taken by a customer. We couldn't make this stuff up if we tried!"
