| Bookwinkle's Children's Books, with its colorful "Mr. Bookwinkle" clown logo, opens the doorway to reading for children in the village of Mendocino and along the North Coast of California. Located in a small rural area far from the bustle of big cities, we provide an important source of quality reading materials for children, parents and teachers. |

Bookwinkle's is fortunate to have on staff Katy Tahja, a credentialed school librarian familiar with curriculum needs. Katy provides advice for teachers and students alike. She also takes Bookwinkle's to education conferences and symposia throughout northern California, providing relevant books on a wide variety of topics. Katy's presentations on topics such as "Math and Science Lessons Hiding in Picture Books" have become very popular. Bookwinkle's prepares customized book lists to back up Katy's talks. Staff members Katy Tahja and Carol Goodwin Blick were called upon in 1996 to contribute their reviews and comments on new children's books to the American Bookseller magazine "Pick of the Lists."

The holiday season finds Bookwinkle's Children's Books alive with angels. For five years we have collected the first names (along with age, first language and interests) of children in need from all over the North Coast. The names are supplied by teachers, parents, and community groups such as the Food Bank and homeless shelters. We display each child's particulars on a "book angel" which hangs in a beautiful wooden display we call a "firmament of stars." Bookwinkle's
customers are encouraged to pick the angel(s) that appeal to them and purchase
a book(s) for those children. Bookwinkle's volunteers spend many hours
wrapping the books and decorating the packages. We track, sort and deliver
the books to the children's sponsors for gift giving at holiday time.

| In 1997
we were delighted to provide more than 750 children with books. For some
of these children it was the first book they had ever owned. We have been
inundated with handmade thank you cards from the children. Every year this
program grows larger and more successful, and we love it and love doing
it.
Bookwinkle's Children's Books may not be the biggest children's bookstore but we know we're one of the best. In an area far removed from intellectual and cultural urban resources for children we are a bright, shining beacon drawing children and adults alike into the pages of a good book. We know that a love of reading acquired when young is a treasure that lasts a lifetime.
