Molly Fox's Birthday
Dierdre Madden
A playwright reflects back on her work and relationships as she struggles with her next play. Beautifully crafted, quietly complex -- like a Russian nesting doll, the story unfolds. I highly recommend spending time with Molly Fox's Birthday!
Beatrice & Virgil
Yann Martel
I have a difficult time describing this work in a few words -- it is strange, intense, and a little like a Grimm fairy tale. However, it is easy to describe in one word: Powerful!
The Last Child
John Hart
The Last Child is taut, gritty & mesmerizing. If you buy one hardcover thriller -- this has to be it! That's my recommendation.
The Shadow Year
Jeffrey Ford
Summer is ending, kids are getting ready to go back to school, and then there's a scream in the night. So begins The Shadow Year. This is the perfect eerie tale -- creepy, funny, poignant and surprising.
How to Talk About Books You Haven't Read
Pierre Bayard
If you haven't read Proust, this book can help you out. If you have read Proust, you will love this book. It is very funny, culturally astute, and it will inspire you to read -- at least I was inspired. It is truly a book for those who love books.
The Burma Chronicles
Guy Delisle
I was looking for something to read while visiting my little brother and stumbled across this gem. Delisle's memoir of his family's year in Burma is personal, insightful, and very funny! The memoir is in graphic format and it is amazing how much story is told in one drawing. This book now sits on my shelf, awaiting a happy discovery.
Ghost In Love
Jonathan Carroll
Ghost In Love is a madcap, romantic comedy with a metaphysical twist. There's a young couple in love (working things out), a ghost chef, and a curious angel. (Oh, and did I mention surprises? Lots.) Jonathan Carroll is my new favorite author -- I loved it!
In the Woods
Tana French
I lost sleep, missed breakfast, and was nearly late for work reading this book. A finely textured psychological police thriller that lingers long after the final page -- a book you will want your friends to read so you can talk about it!
The Wild Trees
Richard Preston
Filled with passion and wonder, The Wild Trees is a very intimate story about the world's tallest trees and the scientists and naturalists who love them. The trees grab hold of the author, leading him into unexplored realms and we get a front row seat for the journey. This book changed the way I see the redwoods!
A Field Guide to Produce
Aliza Green
Did you know that apricots were cultivated in China 4,000 years ago? Or, that carrots
become bitter when stored next to apples? I reach for this wonderful little guide often -- to
answer a question, for inspiration, or just to satisfy my curiosity.
